25 years of teaching experience

Initially, I taught English as a Foreign Language (EFL).

For 11 years, I worked in a college, providing additional support in English & maths up to and including GCSE level.

For the past 6 years, I have tutored students for the 11+ and independent school entrance exams.  I now have my own business and am a dedicated full-time tutor.

- I am fascinated by the structure of language and how we acquire it.

I started out tutoring when my son was preparing for secondary school, so I have personal experience of the school application process and the stresses involved.  He received several offers, including from his first choice where he is now happily settled. 

 

By word of mouth, I went on to tutor other local children.  Mainly they were above average ability but could not afford expensive tuition fees that would put them on a level playing field with other applicants.

Successful offers include: Alleyn’s, Dulwich College, JAGS, Latymer Upper, Christ Hospital, Putney High, Westminster School, Wimbledon High, Sutton Grammar & Wallington County Grammar.

With the changes brought on by Covid 19, I have taken my trade online.  I am now able to reach a wider community than was previously possible.

 

I write. Apart from my blog, I make regular contributions to Critique Circle, an online writing community.  Therefore, I am constantly honing my skills and have first-hand experience of the thought processes involved.

 

I am creative.  This serves me well when designing lessons and materials for my students – I enjoy the challenge of putting the message across in the clearest and most memorable way. 

 

I am methodical.  No skill is left unchecked.  I follow up on tasks.  I review skills in a regular and systematic way.

 

I love tutoring.  And I am a bit of a perfectionist, so I will happily go that extra mile to ensure my students are engaged and learning.
